Agenda
LOG ON

NANOWRIMO: THIS IS IT PEOPLE!
HW: RJ 11.2

Okay, so we met in the computer lab and Emily read the blog. I got so distracted by all the NaNoWriMo craziness that we didn't choose someone to do the blog and didn't set one up so here I am writing about what happened today.

So, first I have all of the amazing novelists a button for participating in National Novel Writing Month! I can't believe it's over. Tear. We started by opening our novels and copying and pasting them from our alphasmarts and then everyone got to writing!

A few people had to go to the classroom to get their alphasmarts because they saved their file in some different place and couldn't find their stuff.  People got to writing though and our first winner was Frank!  Woo hoo!  By the end of the period there were several winners! Yay! I couldn't be prouder, actually. Many of you set super high goals and I'm so impressed with all you wrote this month. People takes months, years, sometimes decades or whole lifetimes before they even think about writing a novel and you all already have. Amazing. Yep. I'm impressed.

Andrea finally showed up toward the end of the period (no, she wasn't skipping, people) and several novelists decided a picture being worth a thousand words might be a good use of their time so Payge and Chris and Jefferey all worked on pictures.  So, according to our class chart, we wrote over 325,000 words! Way to go! Then the bell rang and school was out for the day.

And then Anthony had the NERVE to talk about the girls football team! Payge and I took great offense to that! But Ms. Nakada clocked him on it.

We stopped taking notes and did time lines on the dates in the history we where studying. We had to continue to do this for the rest of the period and if we finished we worked on NaNoWriMo. While we are in the computer Ms. Nakada forgets that we are supposed to read the poems. "Silly Ms. Nakada" as I said. The next thing that we did is read a packet about being a young writer. After we we read the packet Ms. Nakada is talking about creating a novel and the first thing that comes to my mind is, is she crazy? But after she explains it now it isn't that difficult. Now we are about 30 more minutes into the subject then we come back to room 229 to finish the rest of the spa test. While we are taking the test Anthony R. asks Ms. Nakada for a pencil and Ms.Nakada said something funny that made the class laugh but I know that Ms. Nakada thinks she's got jokes just because she made some thirteen year old kids laugh.  When we were done we put the chairs up and Ms. Nakada dismissed us.

Then we turned the page in our notebook/3 ring binders and named it US Maps and turn the page from the book to a18.  We had to draw the US map and label all the regions and all the oceans and color them in. Then she told us that we needed to know the city, state, region, country, and continent we live in.

Today is the 3rd day of school and it's been good. Today Christopher read his blog. Ms. Nakada told him to choose the next blogger and he chose me. Ms. Nakada told us about points. 3/4 per got seven by donating and she explained if we get to 10 points we might have pizza, ice cream and more. Ms. Nakada told the class to take out their reading journals but first she passed out a paper. A reading journal is a note book to keep track of your reading and you have to read 20 pgs or more. Then Ms. Nakada explained about a book she read called The Book Thief. At exactly at 1:18 pm she gave us a point. Now we have 3 points. Then she started talking about 5 people going to the back to go use the computers. We have to go to the Emerson website. Now she told every body to put your reading journals away.
Now we have to take out a piece of paper and our heading in the right corner of your paper. Ms. Nakada explained what to do with the piece of paper. Ms. Nakada gave us a break inside the class room for a minute. She talked about the writing process and how Christopher's blog had 40 people look at it. Ms. Levin was one of them. Then Ms. Nakada made us write topics, genres and audiences on a piece of paper. Then she told us to pack up. She told us to put the chairs up and class was over after that.

Today in class we all wrote down the agenda. After that we listened to Ms. Nakada talk about the blog. We went over a piece of paper called Ms. Nakada's argument for independent reading telling us about reading. It told us about the reading log and stuff like that.

We took a break and came back and started with history. Then we went over a paper called Independent reading rubric. She told us about a book The Hunger Games. She told us to take out our homework.  The assignment was to bring an artifact. We wrote stuff about what we think about the artifacts of other kids. Then we packed up and got ready to leave.

Welcome to the first blog for Ms. Nakada's fifth period English and sixth period US History classes.

After lunch, everyone headed up to room 229 and entered the class for our first day.  I took some time to sign program cards and say so many familiar faces.  I taught a bunch of these students for the first five weeks of sixth grade and they sure have grown up since then.  I called role and, maybe because they were tired from lunch and a long day, but some of my students were less than enthusiastic about being here.

After roll I asked students, "What is your story?"  We talked a little about what stories we've heard and what we might have to say to the world.  We went over the course outlines for English and history, the grading  homework and all of that.  Edgar wasn't sure what in the world I was talking about, and my guess is that lots of students didn't know either, but I'm not worried.  We'll all get there.

After a break between fifth and sixth periods, everyone got their English textbooks (oh, and everyone was on time.  Well done, class).  A nice, tall student fixed the blinds (thanks) and then students took a look at some artifacts in order to learn a little something about their new teacher.  They were pretty observant correctly identifying my age (nice job Chris), how long I've been married, and how short I've been my entire life.

We named our blog (this one you are reading right now) and that was it for the day!  And tomorrow, I look forward to hearing my students' stories!
